This embroidered textile that my mother found for me at the fleamarket a few years ago is thumbtacked to my kitchen door. “Ohne Fleiss kein Preis” is the idiomatic German equivalent to “no pain no gain”—an apt sentiment for the work ahead!
In early December, I sold my next cookbook to my publisher, Ten Speed Press. It’s called Classic German Cooking and will be the perfect companion to Classic German Baking. The size and format will be the same, but instead of focusing on baking recipes, Classic German Cooking will be all about, well, cooking! Soups, stews, roasts, salads, desserts and all of the delicious things in between. The recipes will be sourced from Germany, Austria and Switzerland and the goal will be, again, to provide readers with a curated collection of well-tested, authentic recipes so they can bring the cooking of those countries to their very own kitchens.
I’m excited about writing it for a few reasons. For one thing, the market still really needs a book like this one, geared towards home cooks, with approachable recipes and beautiful photographs (yes, there will be a lot more in this book than there were in Classic German Baking). I’m excited to complete the work I started in the first book so that you end up with a solid, all-encompassing collection of classic German and Austrian recipes for your home kitchens.
