Loved following along on your Instagram stories and thank you for the itinerary! We just returned from our first trip to Scotland and I can’t wait to go back and explore more, especially Skye. Was it difficult navigating the roads? Neither my husband or I have a great sense of direction so I’m a little nervous about driving around.
We had a navigation system in the rental car and Google maps on my phone and that was perfect. The bigger issue is navigating the single track roads (and learning how to drive on the other side of the road), but with a normal car it's really not a big deal.
This looks amazing. I’ve spent a lot of time in Scotland but only a week on Skye, and the weather was so bad the entire time that I didn’t actually see the mountains at all because the clouds were so low! We were also staying in a really old cottage that got so damp all our clothes stayed wet and we spent all week trying to get our daughter’s cloth nappies dry 🤣 Not the most successful trip! We really must go back and try again as it’s one of my husband’s favourite places in the world…he has been blessed with good weather on some of his other trips! Looking forward to hearing about your trip to the Cairngorms too, that’s where we got married ❤️
Oh no, that sounds awful, actually!! We got so lucky with the weather on Skye and also in the Cairngorms, how beautiful that you got married there! Heavenly landscape.
It sounds like you had such a lovely time! Our family always has a much better time on vacays spent in nature compared to cities. What breathtaking pictures you've shared and I'm sure in person it must be a million times more beautiful!
I’ve been to Scotland once, only for a few days, and it’s by far one of my favorite places. I’ll be going back next year after a wedding in Poland. This trip will involve landscapes and hiking. Would love to know what type of shoes you packed?
We are travelling (by car) to Skye in late May so enjoyed reading this.
We have a weekender near a lighthouse and now, everyday, we have tourist buses. They take a photo of lighthouse and move on. My elderly neighbour is very upset that she can no longer walk to beach in the quiet. Please everyone do not drop litter.
I'm reading "The lost lights of St kilda". A really good description of life on little Scottish islands. (Now thinking you might have recommended)
Oh, how lovely - I want to read that! We learned about St. Kilda at Dunvegan Castle. Wish we could have taken a boat there, but there were none to be had. To visit St. Kilda, you have to be accompanied by an official guide apparently...
Fascinating read! I’m Harrison, an ex fine dining industry line cook. My stack "The Secret Ingredient" adapts hit restaurant recipes (mostly NYC and L.A.) for easy home cooking.
Lovely to read this, my husband and I used to visit Skye regularly when we lived in Edinburgh. Neither of us drive so we were at the mercy of public transport (it is definitely possible to do this, just not always easy for anyone who wants to do it that way, does mean you end up waiting in nice cafes or hotels for the next bus or ferry!), but we got to see a fair bit and were generally really lucky with the weather. Raasay on a sunny day is stunning.
Lucky grandchildren!
Sounds like perfection- I hope we are going to hear about you week in Cairngorms as well?
Yes, please share those details also.
Definitely
What a gorgeous trip! Thanks for sharing the details.
Thank you! I am putting the Skye on my list for my future Scotland trip! Love your writing.
Thank you!

I wore my older son's Blundstones most of the time and also had a pair of trekking sneakers for when it was less cold/wet.
Folks who travel with sensitivity to the residents who live in a destination have my vote!!!
Bring back mcvitties pancakes
ooh, didn't see those? We did enjoy their Digestives, though! :)

Thank you for sharing this lovely glimpse. All the mentions of fairies in the landscape remind me of Possession, by A.S. Byatt :)
