I was just texting with a friend about how harried and rush this December feels, especially as we're also packing up house to be ready for our annual Christmas trip. So of course, I'm so curious to see what was on your list, and thinking of writing one to myself for next year.

Top on my list would be to say no to hosting any Christmas markets and corporate events, no matter how charming they seem when the invitations come in early September, when Christmas feels a lifetime away. Instead, i want to leave time for textured, cozy dinners with friends and my kids, with cozy clean up days baked in to each one.

Yes! The email is brilliant and gentle. I might borrow it! Thank you. And the caramel sauce is a triumph.

Smiling to myself because I just found on my calendar an event for 12/30 that I had clearly scheduled last year that says "Don't agree to a NYE event!! You hate them!!" Taking that advice from my past self and letting myself go to bed when I want over the holidays <3

I make notes in my “gift ideas” section of my Filofax for the next year’s Christmas. I never considered this self-care. I feel like I have a new lens through which to look at myself, as I do a lot of that old-fashioned type of organization. I’m so looking forward to your next newsletter about books!

Luisa, I relate to this so much! December is magical and wonderful, but it's also menacing and overwhelming. I love the idea of the email to yourself, and I will most certainly be doing that as I reflect on the 2024 holiday season. And the salted carmel idea is lovely—I'd like to give it a try. Big hugs, and happy holidays!

This year I decided the out of control mad dash to Christmas was just too much. Get the tree up as soon as Thanksgiving is over (or at least before Christmas day), decorate the tree and the house (both inside and out), send out the Christmas cards, shop, wrap, shop some more, plan the Christmas day menu, clear out all the work emails before starting my annual Christmas and New Year sabbatical and oh yes, remember to clean the house and do the laundry. No, I'm done. I want to enjoy this time of year. From now on, it is time to slow things down and enjoy the 12 days of Christmas starting on December 25 and ending on January 6. Christmas cards, treats and gifts needing to be mailed will go out after Christmas day. I need to breathe.
