It's a cold, dark, rainy morning in Seattle. Reading your newsletter upon arriving at work was just the coziness and connection I needed. Can't wait to get Classic German Cooking and start gifting it for Christmas. Also looking forward to making waffles for my two boys this weekend!
Thank you for this book, this recipe, and this: "What you can control is the way you show up in the world, the relationships you build, the way you connect with other people. I am finding some solace in that. And ultimately, I tell myself, what matters most is how we are raising our boys." YES! Thank you for this.
It sounds like the trip was very satisfying! If it’s not too nosy, what kinds of little souvenirs do you bring back with you for your boys? I really love waffles so much more than pancakes, but they are a bit more of a project. Do you think finely chopped walnuts could be substituted for the wheat germ in this recipe?
Ooooh, I love this question. For my boys, I brought back Sour Patch Kids EXTREME because we like our gummy candy to hurt, Nerds Gummy Clusters, because I read somewhere that they are at the top of the Halloween candy list, and some red, white and blue special edition Gummibärchen (my friend Jenny told me to get them). Also, the boys each got a book or two that I thought they might like. I also bought Hugo a teeny-tiny clip light for reading in the dark since they share a room and Bruno's bedtime is earlier than his. I also brought back a bag of Guittard choc chips, a bunch of makeup and beauty products (also thanks to my friend Jenny who works in beauty) and a bunch of books (one that I bought, the rest I was given).
You could sub in walnuts, sure! It might make the waffles a little heavy though? You could just skip the wheat germ and use all-purpose flour too...
If, perchance, you feel like a little change from talking about food, I'd sure love to hear about your new makeup and beauty products and how you like them. (:
Hi Luisa! Thank you for another keepsake worthy cookbook! This is the first and only time I’ve ever preordered a book but I love your baking book so much (soooo much) that I needed to have your new one asap. I read them cover to cover and wanted to make it last as long as possible but ended up devouring it in two or three nights in bed under layers of quilts and duvets. The very first recipe (Zwei Eier) is like a little poem and was worth the price of the book and then some. I’ll read absolutely anything you write. Thank you. Very much.
I live in western NY (Finger Lakes) and wanted to drive out to Vassar to see you but I’ve been away so much lately. I know that anxiety you spoke of, about leaving home.
I was so sad that I wasn't able to come see you at Bold Fork Books. I love the new book. I haven't made anything yet, but am savoring it (can you savor a book?) by reading it page by page. I love your introductions to the recipes - for a lot of them, it's a trip down memory lane for me. I already bought another copy to give to a friend.
I'm so excited for the new book, Louisa, and also so excited for the gift of continuity with the old blog recipes. And I'm grateful for your reminders about community and how we will get through.
I used to worry that people would think I was being lazy, reusing old content. But I love some of those recipes so much! They definitely deserve a second look... :)
They really do! And it's more honest to how many of us cook to talk about returning to old favourites: not everything has to be constantly improved-upon or novel.

So, congratulations and thank you, again.
Oh, thank you so much, that is so lovely to hear. I love those soft little eggs, so simple and yet so underestimated! :)

I just made the chicken fricassee today for Sunday lunch - soooo good! Thank you!
