This was a lovely gift on an already lovely morning. I'm enjoying a quiet cup of coffee with a ten minute timer set for pleasure reading before I try and tackle the various tasks of the business we started to get ourselves through the pandemic while my children watch a movie. Our life is so different than last year on this day and the grief continues to come in waves. But today is a good day - new Senators, new email newsletters, the small things. Glad to be reading your writing again.

My husband, almost single handedly, finished the barberry and toasted pecan Zwieback I made as part of our Christmas cookie selection. We love your recipe!

Loved reading this. We’ve been packing away the Christmas decorations today and I’ve had a battle keeping the fairy lights up- my husband says it’s bad luck- I’m prepared to take my chances.xx

Thank you for this little missive in my inbox! Believe it or not, I had forgotten how much I enjoy your writing. Makes me want to go back and reread My Berlin Kitchen. I'm looking forward to your future newsletters.

I just so happen to have 4 egg whites on my counter after making lemon curd, so the timing of this is perfect. I’m curious to know which audio books your son enjoys. My daughter (she’s 5) has been enjoying podcasts in this Upside Down, and I’d love to find some audiobooks for her as well.

Love your writing! Thank you for corralling all these post holiday feelings into such a relatable letter. Feeling all these similar things over the way in Quebec, Canada. There is comfort in our shared situations - unique to our families and yet similar! Happy January to you all.

Today, January 6th, in Ireland, it is known as Nollaig Na Mban which is Women’s Little Christmas. It is the day women cast off the apron after 12 days of Christmas giving and enjoy a time for themselves.

“On the day when the weight deadens on your shoulders

And you stumble

May the clay dance to balance you

And when your eyes freeze behind the grey window

And the ghost of loss gets into you

May a flock of colors

Indigo, red, green, and azure blue

Come to Awaken in you

A meadow of delight.
